Members of Dawlish and Teignmouth Camera Club were treated to an inspiring presentation this week when Paula Graham of Newton Abbot Camera Club talked about the evolution of her own photography.
On retiring in 1997 she acquired a property with a three acre paddock in the South Hams. She then set about creating a mini wild life reserve.
She did not start using a computer until 2000 and was then persuaded to set up a web site to illustrate her project. This called for photographs so she set about learning how to take pictures with basic equipment. In 2003 she decided that, if she wanted to be serious about this she needed to buy a good camera and lens. From that time she created hides in her paddock and props to photograph visiting wild life from snails to badgers. She specialised in bird photography and, on joining the local camera club, was pleased to win the first competition she entered with a picture of a hovering greenfinch.
Paula then progressed to taking candid pictures of people having done well with a set of images of a party of Muslim school girls. By 2007 she was experimenting with altered imagery using her computer and regularly receiving acclimation for work she entered into competitions, galleries and salons. The audience marvelled at the quality of the work and the short time taken to progress from amateur snaps to a truly professional quality.
